Dental Implants in Devon
Dental Implant Procedures
Before the development of dental implants, dentures were the alternative to many patients for replacing a missing tooth or teeth. Dental implants now enable the dentist to replace a single or multiple missing or damaged teeth with little or no impact to surrounding healthy teeth. Implants are synthetic structures that are placed in the gap where a damaged or missing tooth once was. They are anchored to the jawbone, or metal framework on the bone, and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth. In some cases, implants are also used to attach dentures or bridges.
For a successful implant to take hold, a candidate must have proper bone density and have a strong immune system. In all cases, dental implants require strict oral hygiene to ensure long lasting healthy results. Usually implants are made of a synthetic biocompatible material, like metal or ceramic, and are so well designed that they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth.
Long Term Solution
Dental Implants can be used to restore the look of your teeth in a natural state, as well as fully functional as real teeth.
Dental Implant Procedure
The procedure for dental implants is a bit more complex, so please consult with our dentist to learn more about your options.
How Are Implants Put In?
Implants require surgery, anesthesia and, if necessary, antibiotics to prevent infection following the procedure. The first step surgically is to insert the implant into healthy jawbone tissue under the gums. The patient will wake with a few stitches in their gums and is sent home to heal. They will return for the remainder of the procedure when their gums and jawbone have fully healed, sometimes this can take months. Once the implant site is deemed healed, an abutment is inserted into the implant. An abutment secures the artificial tooth to the implant allowing the artificial tooth to function as a healthy natural tooth would. The dentist works to match the shape and color of your artificial tooth to your surrounding natural teeth, and ensures a proper fit. This can take several appointments to achieve.
Dental implants are also used to anchor a fixed bridge. A bridge is a dental restoration used when replacing several or all of your teeth. The bridge is held firmly in place by dental implants on each side of the gap to be filled. All dental services performed by a general dentist.
