Root Canal Treatments in Devon
Root Canal Therapy
Root canals are the tiny passageways inside your tooth that run from the top of your tooth, downward, until they reach the tip of the root in your jawbone. Depending on size, all teeth have between one and four root canals. When a tooth remains undamaged by decay or trauma, healthy root canals do not cause pain. Trauma, such as a sports injury or biting something very hard, or decay and cavities, can cause cracks in the tooth enamel allowing bacteria to enter the root canals. That bacteria often leads to infection.
Infections that spread to the pulp, which is the inner chamber of the tooth containing blood vessels, nerves and other tissues, spread throughout the root canals. When the infection becomes worse, it can begin affecting the roots and the tissue that connects the tooth to the bone, causing the tooth to become unstable. A traumatic injury to a tooth can also compromise the pulp, leading to similar problems.
A diseased inner tooth brings a host of problems, including pain and sensitivity as the first indications of a problem. Root canal therapy is a remarkable treatment with a very high rate of success, and involves removing the infected tissue, halting the spread of infection and restoring the healthy portion of the tooth. In fact, root canal therapy is designed to save a problem tooth; preventing extraction of the infected tooth in most cases.

Root Canal Treatment Procedure
Root Canal Therapy Procedure
Root canal therapy usually entails more than one visit to fully treat and restore an infected tooth. During the first visit, a small hole is opened through the top of the tooth providing access to the inner chamber. Diseased tissue is removed, the inner chamber is thoroughly cleansed and disinfected, and the tiny canals are reshaped. The cleansed chamber and canals are filled with an elastic material and medication designed to prevent infection. If necessary, the drilled hole in your tooth is temporarily filled until a permanent seal is made with a crown. If a tooth has become unstable, discolored, or fragile as a result of damage from an infection, it can be crowned once the root canal therapy is complete, to restore its integrity.
In the past, root canal therapy was a dreaded diagnosis from your dentist. With modern dental tools and appliances, most patients who have root canal therapy experience very little discomfort or pain. The procedure involves local anesthetic to prevent pain in the tooth area. There are appliances available now which have greatly improved a patient’s experience across many dental procedures associated with holding the mouth open for extended periods. If you find yourself with a damaged tooth that requires root canal therapy, you can relax and look forward to a restored tooth that can last almost as long as its healthy original. All dental services performed by a general dentist.
