Wisdom Teeth Removal in Devon
Having Issues With Your Wisdom Teeth?
An impacted tooth is one which has been prevented from erupting into the mouth. The tooth may be blocked by another tooth, dense bone or a pathological condition. Any tooth can be impacted, but more often than not, impacted teeth are our third molars, commonly called “wisdom teeth.” Some people have enough room in the back of their mouth for their wisdom teeth to either erupt or remain below the bone and never have a problem. Many others, however, do not have enough room and their wisdom teeth become crowded up against other molars or they fail to come through the gum tissue properly and cause pain and eventually infection. These teeth are removed to prevent further damage.
Why Some Wisdom Teeth Become A Problem
All teeth develop in a sack deep in the bone. If the tooth erupts normally, the sack generally disappears. If the tooth is impacted, the sack can fill with fluid and enlarge to eventually form a cyst. The cyst can cause destruction of surrounding bone and damage to other teeth in the area over time. All the while, the patient is unaware of the storm brewing in their jaw because it cannot be seen above the gumline.
Saliva contains bacteria; whenever saliva reaches the damaged area of a tooth, decay can occur and such cavities cannot be filled, severe pain often results. If left undetected, this cavity is followed by the formation of an abscess.

What is the Process for Removing Wisdom Teeth?
Removing Wisdom Teeth
We generally recommend removing wisdom teeth before they become a problem and to avoid a more complicated surgery later in life. Wisdom tooth extraction is a day-surgery, in and out of the office the same day. The type of anesthesia for you depends on the expected complexity of the wisdom tooth extraction and your own comfort level. During the wisdom tooth extraction surgery, your dentist:
- Makes an incision in the gum to expose the tooth and bone
- Removes any bone that blocks access to the tooth
- Divides the tooth into sections if necessary to make it easier to remove in pieces
- Removes the tooth
- Cleans and removes any debris from the tooth or bone
- Stitches the wound closed to promote healing, though this isn’t always necessary
- Places gauze over the extraction site to control bleeding and to help a blood clot form
After the surgery, you are given some time to recover from the anesthesia before we send you home with comprehensive instructions for care of your mouth in the days that follow to ensure a speedy and uncomplicated recovery. All dental services performed by a general dentist.
